Bedroom lighting ideas that work in Kenyan homes

Almost every bedroom in Kenya is built the same way: one bulb in the middle of the ceiling, one switch by the door. It lights the room evenly and flatly, which is exactly wrong for the hours you actually use a bedroom. This is how to fix that with what a tenant is allowed to change.

The problem with one ceiling light

A single overhead bulb throws light down from above your head. It flattens faces, casts shadows under the eyes, and lights the whole room at one brightness whether you are getting dressed or falling asleep. It is a working light being asked to do a resting job.

The fix is not a brighter bulb or a better ceiling fitting. It is a second, lower source of light that you use instead of the ceiling, not as well as it.

Three layers, and you only need two

  • Ambient. Your ceiling light. Good for cleaning the room and finding things. On when you need to see, off when you want to settle.
  • Task. A bedside lamp at roughly shoulder height when you are sitting up in bed. This is the one that matters and the one most bedrooms lack.
  • Accent. A lamp on a dresser or shelf across the room. Optional, but it stops the bedside lamp being a single bright point in a dark room.

Two layers is enough for almost any bedroom. Ceiling plus bedside covers everything. Add the third only if the room is large or oddly shaped.

Get the bedside height right

The most common mistake is a lamp that is too short. If the bottom of the shade sits below your shoulder when you are sitting up in bed, the bulb glares straight into your eyes the moment you turn to read. Aim for the bottom of the shade to land around eye level or just below, seated.

On a low bedside table that usually means a lamp between 35 and 45 centimetres tall. On a taller nightstand, shorter. Measure from the top of the table, not the floor.

Use warm light after dark

Colour temperature matters more in a bedroom than anywhere else in the house. Cool white light, around 6500 K, is what most Kenyan ceiling bulbs are, and it is the same light used in offices and shops for a reason: it keeps you alert. That is the opposite of what a bedroom needs at 10pm.

A warm bulb around 2700 K reads like a low incandescent. It is the difference between a room that feels like somewhere to sleep and one that feels like a corridor. Every lamp we make ships with a warm dimmable bulb for exactly this reason.

Ideas that need no electrician

  • A lamp either side of the bed. The classic, for good reason: each person controls their own light and nobody crosses the room in the dark.
  • One lamp and a mirror. A lamp near a mirror doubles its reach. Useful where there is only space for one.
  • A lamp on the floor in a corner. Light thrown up a wall makes a low-ceilinged room read taller, and it is the cheapest way to soften a boxy space.
  • Skip the ceiling light entirely in the evening. The cheapest change here costs nothing at all.

None of these involve touching the wiring, which matters if you rent.
